Slough's best kept secret

Herschel Park, Slough will be brought back to its former life, thanks to a £1.69m lottery grant secured by Slough Borough Council.

The Slough park was originally landscaped in the 1840s as the private pleasure grounds of a Victorian housing development. It contains two small lakes, one with an island, a bridge and a wonderful variety of trees. In 1949, it was sold to Slough Borough Council and renamed Herschel Park, before opening to the public.

The generaous grant, from the Big Lottery and Heritage Lottery, will turn this Grade II listed park into its original splendour, with a new multi-use community building will be built. A nature reserve which adjoins the park will also be enhanced through the planting of trees and wildflowers.

Denise Alder, strategic director of green and built environment for Slough Borough Council, said: “This is wonderful news for Slough and the park and will go a very long way in restoring the much loved area to its heyday.

“Congratulations to the parks team for securing the funding.”

Commissioner for environment and open spaces, Cllr Satpal Parmar, added: “The substantial funding will help to transform Herschel Park for residents to enjoy in the coming years. It’s a lovely park and with the new work going ahead, will create a fantastic place for families to enjoy.”
