Pupils from schools across Slough came together on Monday, November 17, to sing out against bullying and select the official anti-bullying song for Slough for 2008/09.
In October, Nathan Timothy from the charity Beatbullying visited eight Slough schools and held music workshops to get pupils to spread the anti-bullying message.
Each Slough school wrote, composed and recorded a song, which was entered into the competition, ‘Anti-bullying X Factor – Adopt a song for Slough’.
The songs were played to a judging panel of three impartial pupils during the special event, which took place at The Centre on the Farnham Road.
In an X-factor style sing-off Priory School and Parlaunt Park had to play their songs again before Priory School’s ‘Tell Somebody Quick’ was named as the chosen song.
Slough Mayor, Cllr Raja Zarait, then presented pupils from the school with a special engraved trophy, kindly donated by local company, Bullseye Ltd.
Malcolm Orgill, strategic lead for anti-bullying at Slough Borough Council, said: “The workshops were a fantastic way for children to engage their creativity with the very serious matter of putting a stop to bullying.
“The day was a great success and demonstrated how pupils can work together to sing out against bullying with a united voice.
“Well done to the pupils of Priory School who composed the chosen song, Tell Somebody Quick.”
Cllr Sukhjit Dhalliwal, commissioner for education and children’s services, said: “All of the pupils involved should be extremely proud of their achievements in producing these fantastic songs with strong anti-bullying messages. Well done to everyone involved with the day.”
Nathan Timothy, BBTunes coordinator at Beatbullying, said: “Music is a fantastic way to engage young people with the anti-bullying message and the panel must have had a tough job judging the songs.
“It’s hoped the anti-bullying songs will carry through the serious message to children in Slough that bullying is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
The schools involved each wrote, composed and recorded their songs in October. The names of the tracks by each school are:
* Stand Your Ground – Parlaunt Park Primary
* You Get In My Head – St Mary’s C of E Primary
* Heart is From The Moon – James Elliman School
* Spinning Round and Round – St Bernards RC Grammar
* Normal Day – Langley Grammar
