More than 100 young Slough people got together on March 25, to learn to sing and perform songs as part of the national singing campaign, Sing Up.
The Mayor of Slough gave his support at the musical event.The campaign is aimed at encouraging every school in the country to make singing part of school life and was launched across Berkshire with a week of events and workshops for schools, pupils and teachers.
The main event, organised by Slough Music Service and Creative Junction, was held at The Centre where workshops were presented all day, along with events for teachers and pupils.
Nationally renowned workshop leaders led the Slough sessions with adults and children from across the county to celebrate the beginning of a two year project to encourage every school in Berkshire to become make singing a part of their school life.
During the afternoon, young singers from Slough’s primary schools learnt and performed songs, as well as listened to a performance by internationally recognised vocal group, Voces8.
The day ended at 6pm with performances by local choirs, both children and adults.
Simon Lock, head of Slough music service for Slough Borough Council, said: “This was a wonderful opportunity for Slough’s young people to come along and sing together.
“It was also a good time for teachers to see how much fun bringing music into schools can be. All the children did very well and really enjoyed themselves.”
Commissioner for Slough education and children’s services, Cllr Sukhjit Dhaliwal, added: “I’m glad to see this initiative encouraging pupils to make singing part of their school day, and I hope it will be taken up across the borough in the future.
“Music is a great way to learn many things and I hope all the young people who attended had a very good time.”
