Road safety Slough check

Nearly 40 motorists were stopped as part of a road safety check in Slough on 12/11.

PC Bob Wade, Road Safety Constable from the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership, joined officers from the Roads Policing department and road safety officers from Slough Borough Council to carry out the check on Northern Roadbetween 8am and 11am.

The aim of the Slough check was to look at drivers committing offences that have an adverse effect on road safety, such as not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone and other offences to do with the construction and use of the vehicles.

28 people were issued with Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) of £60 for failing to wear a seatbelt. This fine has recently been increased from £30. These individuals were offered the option of completing an online course. The course costs £25 and is paid online. If successful the fixed penalty is cancelled.

Five Slough drivers were caught using their mobile phone and issued a FPN of £60 and three penalty points on their license. They were offered the chance to attend a Call Divert education course at a cost of £79.50, in place of the fine and points.

Four vehicles were seized by officers as the drivers had either no driving licence or no insurance. For no insurance the drivers would receive a £200 fixed penalty and six points. In order to get the vehicle released the driver needs to produce the correct documents to drive the vehicle and pay the £150 recovery bill plus any daily storage costs.

During the course of the Slough check one person was arrested as it was found that the person was wanted by police for failing to appear in court.

PC Bob Wade said: “I am always pleased to remove vehicles from the roads where the driver has no insurance or driving licence. However, it is always disappointing to see such simple road safety measures not being taken seriouslyby some drivers today.”
