Recycling is Slough wheelie changing!

Slough Domestic recycling will be getting a re-vamp in the Autumn, when all residents will receive a brand new wheelie bin for their recyclable waste.

In October and November 2008, households will be delivered new red recycling wheelie bins which will take paper, card, food and drinks cans, glass bottles and jars, and, for the first time, plastic bottles.New red wheelie bins come to Slough this Autumn

The red bins will replace the black box scheme to ensure that residents can recycle more than ever before.

At cabinet this week, councillors agreed that recycling will continue to be collected weekly, along with other waste in the grey bins. Green waste will continue to be collected fortnightly.

Slough Residents will receive further information about the changes to recycling later on in the summer, as well as when the new red bins are delivered. In the meantime, further information can be found on the recycling pages of this website.

Cllr Sat Pal Parmar, commissioner for environment and open spaces, said: “Making Slough greener is one of our top priorities and these positive changes in recycling will go towards making Slough a cleaner, safer and greener place to live.

“We decided to keep recycling collections weekly along with normal waste to make it easier for residents and to encourage them to recycle more.

“I would urge all residents when they get their red bin to use it to its full potential to help reduce the tons of waste that go into landfill every year.”

Sarah Bryan, recycling officer, said: “Late last year we held an extensive consultation to find out from residents how they wanted to recycle in the future.

“We were impressed to find out that our residents are keen to be green, with 97 per cent of them saying that recycling was important to them.

“The new red bin scheme is the result of what residents said they wanted from recycling and I am pleased that for the first time, we can introduce plastic bottles to the scheme.”

Slough resident, Frania Creech, added: "I’m really pleased with the introduction of the new red recycling bins. I’ve been taking my plastics to the mini recycling centres since they were introduced, which has been a bit of a chore. This new kerbside collection will make things a lot easier now.

“Recycling is the way forward and now there will be no excuse!"
