Radio Underdog bites back in Slough

This summer, Slough Young People’s Centre (SYPC) will re-launch its popular station, Radio Underdog, thanks to a successful funding bid from the Youth Opportunity Fund (YOF).

SYPC offers a range of creative activities for 13 to 25 year olds.In February, young people and staff from SYPC, which is supported by Slough Borough Council, submitted the bid and were successful in securing £24,000.

It will pay for a two week licence, allowing the station to broadcast non-stop from August 18 to 29 on its well-known 87.7FM frequency

The money will also fund training for young people to learn how to produce and broadcast material for the station.

Radio Underdog began as a small radio production course in 2004 , and transmitted a number of times in 2005. However, due to insufficient funding, the station left the airwaves later that year.

The re-launch of Slough Radio Underdog comes hot on the heels of the new-look SYPC website, which recently received funding from the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA).

Jermaine Richardson, drop in worker for SYPC, said: “The SYPC radio station is such a hit with the young people, we’re thrilled to have secured this money.

“In the past, broadcasts have played a range of music styles from Banghra to hip-hop, with guest interviews and even a parent’s hour.

“It’ll be great to see what our budding DJs come up with this year.”

Cllr Patricia O’Connor, commissioner for Slough opportunity and skills, said: ”Radio Underdog is an excellent creative venture that allows young people get involved with what they want to hear on the airwaves.

“With a range of courses available at the centre, I would encourage anybody aged 16 to 25 to go along and see what they can put their imagination towards.”
