People 1st Slough launches rent campaign

People 1st (Slough) is launching a campaign to remind residents to pay their rent during the festive season.

A range of Slough posters have been produced, making stark comparisons between the cost of buying an expensive present and the cost of being evicted for not paying rent.

From the beginning of December, the reminders will be displayed in the Slough MyCouncil customer service centre and in the People 1st newsletter, ‘1st News’.

Juliet James-Lionel, director of housing and neighbourhood services for People 1st (Slough), said: “In these difficult economic times, our campaign is asking tenants to make sure they don’t fall into arrears.

“When times are tough, sound financial planning is essential, with paying rent a priority.

“In the last financial year, we achieved 98 percent success rate for rent collection in Slough. If rent income falls, we will not be able to maintain services to tenants.

“It’s in everyone’s interest to adopt the right spending priorities. The message is to remember that rent is still due throughout the festive period.”

Emma Gill, head of rent recovery for People 1st Slough, said: “We’re here to discuss the options available to people who experience difficulties paying rent, including different payment methods and agreements to clear arrears.

“We’re here to offer help but we also want tenants to be aware we will take action if they fall into arrears with payments.”

Cllr James Swindlehurst, commissioner for neighbourhoods and renewal, said: “The message is clear for tenants – do not risk falling into arrears for the price of an expensive gift.

“We all know Christmas can be costly, so if you need help, talk to the People 1st team who can offer valuable guidance.”
