The next screening of the Slough Cooperative Film Society will be La Nana (The Maid) tomorrow night Thursday 28th April at the West Wing Arts Center in Stoke Road, starting at 19:45

Sebastián Silva’s film is an unexpected combination: a gripping psychological thriller, and also a poignant human drama. It really is edge-of-the-seat stuff, with a startling denouement, and an outstanding central performance from Catalina Saavedra. She plays Raquel, the live-in uniformed maid, working for a well-to-do family in Santiago, Chile, in a handsome house with a pool, attending to the needs of the master and mistress along with their lively teenage children. She must also show respect to the children’s very haughty and patrician grandmother, who comes to visit and does not hesitate to give her views on how the household should be run.

Death is a funny thing – both peculiar and ha-ha. Director Yojiro Takita and writer Kundo Kayama know this and aren’t afraid to give you an emotional punch as well as a punchline. Takita approaches his film as a careful orchestration, blending sweet with sour to produce an unexpected and subtle symphony of moods that was a surprise, but worthy, winner of the foreign language Oscar [in 2009]. Director/Writer: Andrzej Jakimowski
Starring: Damian Ul who plays Stefek, a boy whose life is governed largely by his older sister, Elka (Ewelina Walendziak). It’s a rare slice of magical realism crafted with such precision that it almost convinces us the rules have changed not only within the film but within life as a whole.

  10. Slough Cooperative Film Society next screening will be Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans on Thursday 3rd March 2011 at the West Wing Art Centre at 19:45. Non Members welcome, entrance £5. This is a thriller from the legendary Werner Herzog starring Nicolas Cage

Asda Slough goes gaga for children’s author

Parents in Slough will be given a lesson in nutrition and healthy eating for babies and toddlers next week from renowned children’s cookery author, Annabel Karmel MBE.

Annabel is the author of bestselling book on feeding children, The Complete Baby and Toddler Meal Planner. On Thursday 20 January from 4:30pm she will be at local supermarket, Asda Slough, to sign copies of her books and to answer any food-related questions from parents.

Parents will also be given advice on weaning children and will have the chance to sample Annabel and Disney’s healthy snack range, which is available in store.

Gail Fitt, general store manager at Asda Slough, said:

“Annabel’s visit to the store is a great chance for parents to gain an invaluable insight and advice into healthy eating and recipe ideas as she is a leading expert in child nutrition and development.

“She will also be on-hand to offer advice to parents of children who are fussy eaters.

“This session also forms part of the overall support we want to give parents. According to recent figures from the Family and Parenting Institute, having a baby in 2011 will cost thousands of families an extra £1,800 compared with last year. With this in mind we want to do all we can to give new parents the best start and will be running in store promotions on our baby and toddler ranges.”

    Annabel Karmel added:

“I am really looking forward to meeting and chatting with mums in the store. I know how difficult it can be feeding babies and toddlers, especially if they are quite fussy, so I will be happy to answer questions and give Asda customers some of my top tips.”
