New family homes for Slough

A key new housing scheme has been given the go ahead by Slough Borough Council for 65 brand new homes to be built in the town on the old site of Western House School.

Taylor-Wimpey bought the land and will build the Slough family homes, including 20 which will be used for affordable housing, with the council able to nominate people into the new homes from its waiting list.

Sovereign Housing Group, a Registered Social Landlord (RSL) partner of the Slough local authority, received funding from the Homes and Community Agency (HCA) of £1,590,000 in December. All 20 of the new homes will be owned and managed by Sovereign.

This is a key scheme for the town as it will provide larger family housing in a very popular part of Slough borough. The mixture of the 20 homes will be:

* Two x three bed bungalows (for people with physical disabilities)
* Nine x three bed houses
* Seven x four bed houses
* Two x five bed houses

Jeremy Walter, strategic housing manager for Slough Borough Council, said: “This is very welcome news that we now have the go ahead for the scheme and Sovereign have secured the funding.

“Larger family homes are so crucial for the council as they are in such short supply. Many original council homes having been sold under the right to buy scheme since 1980 and there is a lack of land in Slough to replace them.

“People often have to wait many years for larger family homes on the waiting list in unsatisfactory housing conditions, but this will definitely help.”

Commissioner for neighbourhoods and renewal, Cllr James Swindlehurst, added: “These additional affordable housing units are good news for residents awaiting new homes. Slough has one of the longest housing waiting lists, and that is despite us being committed to providing affordable housing.

“We have already provided around 400 affordable homes in just over 18 months, including 120 homes as part of our garage strategy. This site will include much needed family housing, and I welcome the approval of this scheme.”
