June was anything but a ‘paw’ month for micro-chipping, with Slough Borough Council’s animal warden, Jackie Singer and the RSPCA, chipping more than 30 dogs.
Chihuahuas to Collies received the special device, but the most micro-chipped Slough breed was the Staffordshire bull terrier, which is probably the most lost or stolen breed.
Micro-chipping is an invaluable way to protect Slough pets should they be lost or stolen and literally only takes a few seconds for the tiny device to be planted in the back of the animal’s neck.
The tiny implant is no bigger than a grain of rice and the owner’s information can be registered on a national database. The micro-chipping took place in seven different areas of Slough over seven days in June.
Free dog poop bags were also handed out to encourage owners to be responsible for dog fouling.
If owners are found leaving their dog’s mess on the street or in the park, they will face a Fixed Penalty Notice of £50, if that is not paid, the person responsible can be prosecuted.
Jackie Singer, animal warden for Slough Borough Council, said: “Last month was a huge success and it was fantastic to see so many owners taking responsibility by getting their dogs micro-chipped.
“It can be very upsetting for a dog, and its owner, if it’s lost and we can’t find out who they belong too. This simple device saves time and heartache.”
Commissioner for Slough neighbourhoods and renewal, Cllr James Swindlehurst, added: “I’m very pleased to hear there were many dogs being micro-chipped last month.
“It’s a very effective way of keeping your pet safe which is not very costly, nor painful for the animal. If you haven’t done so yet, I would urge anyone with a dog to go along to either their vet or the next sessions run by the council and RSPCA.”
Jackie Singer will be at two more events over July and August, handing out free dog poop bags, general advice and micro-chipping.
These will be held at –
* The RSPCA Pinewood Dog Show on Saturday, July 12 at Pinewood Studios
* Upton Court Park on Bank Holiday Monday, August 25, sponsored by The Hillingdon, Slough, Windsor and Kingston District RSPCA.
All are welcome.
