Man sentenced for attempted Slough vehicle theft

A Slough man has been sentenced to 24 weeks in prison for the attempted theft of a motor vehicle.

William Maughan, aged 44, of Newhaven Spur, Britwell, was sentenced at Slough Magistrates’ Court on 26 October.

The sentence relates to an incident in Barchester Road, Langley, Slough on 4 December 2008. At about 1.36pm, the owner of a white Mercedes van disturbed Maughan fixing a tow rope to his vehicle in an attempt to steal it. Maughan drove off in another vehicle when the man said he would call the police.

PC Jay Knewell, investigating officer, said: "We believe Maughan was trying to steal the van to sell for scrap. This sentence sends out a clear message that police and the courts will deal robustly with vehicle theft."
