Make a difference: Visit the Slough volunteer police officer recruitment event

Members of the Slough public interested in becoming a Special Constable can find out how they join Thames Valley Police at a series of events over the next six weeks.

Members of the Slough Special Constabulary will be on hand at five interactive recruitment events to explain how volunteer Slough police officers can help tackle crime and keep their communities safe.

The first event will be held from 7pm on Wednesday, 28 January at the Copthorne Hotel, Slough.

Further events will be held at the Holiday Inn at the Peartree Hotel, Oxford, on Wednesday 25 February, Sulhamstead Police Training Centre, near Reading on Wednesday, 18 March, Milton Keynes police station on Wednesday, March 11. A further event to be held in Buckinghamshire in March will also be announced.

Each event will allow people to gain a better understanding of what it is like to volunteer as a police officer in Thames Valley.

Special Constabulary Chief Officer Nigel Woodley said: “These events enable anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to be a volunteer police officer to come along and find out about becoming a Special Constable.

“The evenings will consist of a presentation on the role of the volunteer police officer as well as interactive sessions and an informal question and answer session. Special Constables and support staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

“We have always received excellent feedback about how informative and enjoyable these events are. If you have been thinking about volunteering, this is a chance to find out whether the Special Constabulary is for you.”

Special Slough Constables are unpaid volunteers who have the same powers as a regular officer including the power of arrest and are issued with the same uniform and equipment. They play a vital part in supporting their regular colleagues in tackling local issues, responding to incidents and policing events.

People give their time for a variety of reasons: to give something back to the community; to gain vital life skills and experience; or as a stepping stone to becoming a full-time officer.
