Launch of Slough cycle and walking map

Slough Borough Council launched its new cycle and walking map last week to encourage residents out of their cars to make Slough a cleaner, safer and greener place to be.

The Slough map is brightly colour coded and outlines cycle and bus lanes, National Cycle Network routes and pathways through parks and along the canal, throughout the borough.

The aim is for Slough residents to switch to sustainable methods of travel such as walking, cycling or using public transport which bring widespread benefits to the town, including:

* Reducing congestion and improving the efficiency of the transport network, resulting in time-saving journeys
* Reducing pollution from petrol and diesel fumes which improves air quality and reduces asthma and related illnesses
* Improving health and fitness of residents – cycling and walking can reduce heart disease, obesity, diabetes and lower blood pressure
* Cutting long-term healthcare costs and reducing sickness and ill health problems for local businesses
* Promoting access to leisure opportunities and quieter parts of Slough
* Improving quality of life for residents

Savio DeCruz, principal engineer for integrated transport at Slough Borough Council, said: “Walking and cycling are the healthiest ways to get around and with this new cycle map, residents can exercise and play their part in reducing pollution and greenhouse gases.

“Slough is an ideal area for cycling as its compact and flat. There are a number of walking and cycle routes suitable for residents to travel to work, to go shopping and travel to school that are environmentally friendly and quicker during rush hours.”

Slough Cllr James Swindlehurst, commissioner for neighbourhoods and renewal, said: “This map is a great resource for residents.

“With traffic-free routes through our town’s green spaces, and links to Windsor and Eton Bridge, I hope adults and children alike will get out and about on their bikes and explore the sights.”
