Children and young people will soon be able to enjoy brand new play facilities in Slough following a successful funding bid for £322k from the Big Lottery.
Slough Borough Council applied to the Big Lottery in September 2007, and last week was successful in securing the money, which will fund two new play areas.
The first improvement will be a water-based play area at Salt Hill Park and the second an adventure and natural landscape development in Upton Court Park.
It will also fund a play ranger who will work with children and young people to promote the new facilities.
Further to this post, Slough council has also allocated financial support to employ a play co-ordinator who will raise the profile of play in Slough in partnership with local organisations.
Existing play areas across the borough will also benefit from £1.1million received earlier this year from the Department of Children, Families and Schools (DCFS), with plans for the 20 areas to be revamped or refurbished.
Steve Wicks, cultural operations manager for Slough Borough Council, said: “We’re extremely pleased with the BIG Lottery funding which accompanies funding from the DCFS announced by the government earlier this year.
“The money will enable us to build flagship facilities in the town and kick-start the improvement process as highlighted in Slough’s Play Strategy.
“The plan to reinvigorate play in Slough is well and truly underway, with £1.422million secured.
“The funding will contribute to exciting new facilities for children and young people in Slough, allowing them to explore and play safely whilst parents enjoy surrounding parks and open spaces."
