Free compost for Slough green fingered gardeners

Slough Borough Council will be giving away free compost to all Slough residents at Wexham Nursery on Saturday, October 11 from 10am until 1pm.

The compost is produced from garden waste collected through Slough council’s green bin recycling scheme.

Slough Residents who use this scheme can recycle most of their garden waste including grass, hedge cuttings, branches, twigs and leaves.

This is then made into rich, dark compost which can be used to feed soil and make potting mixes for garden plants.

For the first time residents will be able to pick up free bags of wood chips collected from trees felled in Slough. The wood chips can be used to line garden paths and dried out to be used as mulch.

The environmental quality team will be on hand at the nursery to promote the council’s green waste collection and home composting schemes. They will also be providing information on the new red wheelie bin recycling scheme.

Kathryn Horsepool, environmental quality officer for Slough Borough council, said: “I encourage all residents to come along to Wexham Nursery and pick up their free bag of compost and wood chips.

“It’s a great way to reuse waste collected from the green bins and demonstrates how our town is committed to improving the environment.

“To date more than 18,000 Slough residents have their garden waste collected fortnightly through the free green bin scheme.

“To sign up, email your name and address to greenwaste@slough.gov.uk, or call 01753 875255.”

Cllr Satpal Parmar, commissioner for environment and open spaces, said: “As part of the cleaner, safer, greener campaign we’re urging residents to consider the benefits of recycling.

“The free green waste bins offered by the council are a great way of making small but effective changes in our households – and the compost produced is a fantastic free product which can then be used by green fingered gardeners.

“Stocks of compost and wood chip are limited, so get there early for your free bag.”

Wexham Nursery, Wexham Road, Slough will be open as normal on the day, from 10am to 4pm, with a range of plants and flowers for sale.
