Drug advice sessions for Slough women

Slough’s Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) will be offering support to women with substance misuse issues with two advice sessions on Friday, March 6.

The Slough DAAT organised the sessions following a recent report by Asian drugs charity Nafas, which highlighted an increase in the number of Asian women using Class A drugs.

The sessions are suitable for all Slough women, but are hoping to encourage Asian women to come forward and seek support. They will also be held in support of International Women’s Day on Sunday, March 8.

The DAAT is keen to develop work with women in relation to drug and alcohol misuse. The challenges for this client group are particularly difficult and support workers are making some very positive moves towards helping women in need.

Representatives from T2, Slough’s accessible and confidential drug support service for people over the age of 18, will also be on hand.

The sessions will be held at:

* Britwell Library – women’s only coffee morning, from 9am to 11am
* Slough Library – women’s only drug and alcohol awareness drop-in session, from 12pm to 4pm

Amy Jaques, DAAT project officer for Slough Borough Council, said: “Our sessions provide an opportunity for women to get confidential advice about drugs and alcohol.

“The sessions are a great outlet for women and we will have support workers on hand to offer valuable information and guidance.

“Health activists, who speak a range of languages, and representatives from T2 will also be on hand to discuss any issues.”

Cllr Chrissy Small, commissioner for Slough health and wellbeing, said: “The DAAT team are making great efforts to engage with sections of the community that may not find drug and alcohol support easily accessible.

“By raising awareness of drugs and alcohol and the local services available, they hope to help not only those women suffering with addiction, but also female family members and carers of someone with substance abuse problems.”
