Don't let Slough burglars steal your keys

Thames Valley Police have issued an urgent warning to Slough residents asking them not to leave their keys within reach of doors and windows after a recent increase in car key burglaries in the borough.

Over the past few weeks, there have been several cases of vehicles being taken following burglaries in which car keys were stolen. The offences have taken place across Slough, particularly in the Cippenham and Wexham areas.

Det Insp Nicola Hurdley, who heads the Slough Priority Crime Team, said: "In most of these cases, there was no sign of forced entry, which suggests the burglars have been able to get hold of house or car keys by reaching through an open window or door.

"Burglars will put their hand through the letter box to open an unlocked door from the inside, or use an implement to hook keys left close by.

"Although we have not had the barbeque summer promised by forecasters, the humid weather has led householders to leave windows and doors open, which unfortunately provides a golden opportunity for burglars.

"I would urge people to keep their doors and windows closed at all times when they’re out of the house and through the night, especially on the ground floor.

"Whilst we support the fire service’s advice to make sure house keys are accessible in case of fire, I would ask people to put the keys in a safe place that can’t be reached through doors or windows. Never leave keys in the lock, as they can easily be fished out via the letter box or an open window.

"We have had real success in tackling burglary in Slough, which dropped by ten per cent in 2008/09. The burglary rate is still falling, with a further reduction of 14.8 per cent from 1 April 2009 to date.

"Despite these reductions, we are concerned by the recent spate of car key burglaries. In part, these are due to advances in motor vehicle technology, such as immobilisers, which have made it very difficult for thieves to steal cars without the keys.

"Domestic burglary remains a top priority for Thames Valley Police, and we continue to work closely with our partners to reduce this distressing crime."
