Slough Borough Council is warning residents to be on their guard following reports of a bogus caller pretending to be a council officer.
In at least one Slough incident, a caller, who has what seems to be a valid ID badge, has talked their way into a house in Cippenham, said they were doing a survey, asked personal questions about the property and financial affairs of the residents and looked around the house and garden. However, nothing was stolen.
The caller claimed the council had written to the residents previously and threatened that if they didn’t answer the questions they would be taken to court.
The matter has been reported to the police.
Slough Borough Council said: “Slough Borough Council is not doing any surveys at the moment which would require residents to give personal details about the financial affairs relating to their property.
“We would suggest that if residents are cold called by someone claiming to be from the council to take their name and telephone number and call the council straight away to check they are legitimate.
“No genuine council officer will object to a resident checking on them.”
Any resident who is approached in this way is asked to contact Slough Borough Council’s customer service centre on 01753 475111 and the police on 0845 8 505 505.
