Council renovates 2000th Slough kitchen

People 1st (Slough) completed the renovation of its 2000th kitchen this month, as part of its decent homes programme to raise the standard of social housing.

The ALMO has been carrying out work on kitchens, bathrooms, central heating, electric rewiring and external doors since 2006.

The 2000th recipient of a revamped Slough kitchen was Mrs Pamela Stone from Baylis and Stoke. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Lorraine Pearce and Richard Harding of United House, the contractor responsible for the installation.

By April, 2010 approximately 4,000 homes will have received one or more improvements. This follows the news that the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) agreed to bring forward £7million allocated to 2010/11 to be spent in 2009/10 in order to bring more homes up to the decent homes standard sooner.

Chair of the People 1st (Slough) board, Sue Morris, expressed enormous satisfaction with the achievement. She said: “Bringing homes up to a decent standard will make a huge difference for our tenants. By the time improvement works have been completed, a total of 3,700 new kitchens will have been installed, which is fantastic.”

Cllr James Swindlehurst, commissioner for Slough neighbourhoods and renewal, said: “We’re committed to improving the quality of homes for tenants in the borough and completion of the 2000th kitchen is a milestone the entire team and contractors should be proud of.”
