Slough Borough Council has been named as one of the top 20 most improved local authorities in England, with a 22.5 percentage point increase of Slough pupils attaining five A* to C grade GCSEs, including English and maths, over the last decade.
The Slough figures, released by the department for children, schools and families, showed Slough in 13th place out of the top 20 local authorities that have seen the greatest improvements in results from 1998 to 2008.
Bill Alexander, assistant director of raising achievement for Slough Borough Council, said: “This listing is testament to the hard work of students, teachers and support staff and the effective working relationships between schools and the local authority.
“It highlights the success over the past decade that has led to immense improvements in our schools.
“We will continue to provide high quality education for children in Slough, and strive to improve the excellent GCSE results year on year.”
Cllr Sukhjit Dhaliwal, commissioner for Slough education and children’s services, said: “This fantastic result shows how much effort staff put in at our schools across the borough to ensure pupils get the best results.
“We’re committed to providing our children and young people in Slough with the best possible opportunities, and a solid education is immensely important to setting them in good stead for the future.”
