Council catches Slough red light jumpers

Slough Borough Council has been clamping down on irresponsible motorists, stopping 53 drivers caught jumping red lights during roadside checks on 26 May.

Slough Road safety officers working in partnership with Thames Valley Police, stopped motorists at roundabouts on Wellington Street and the A4 intersection with Stoke Poges Lane, as part of the council’s commitment to creating a safer communities and making Slough a safer place.

According to police figures, ignoring traffic light signals is one of the main reasons for accidents in Slough.

There are a number of red light camera sites across the borough. These have been chosen due to the number of injuries caused by road traffic collisions.

Mike Seatory, road safety officer for Slough Borough Council, said: “These hotspots were targeted due to high numbers of accidents caused by drivers failing to stop at red lights.

“Drivers must be aware that amber means stop unless you have already crossed the stop line, or are so close to it that to stop might cause an accident.

“By the time the lights have changed to red there is a high possibility that traffic could already be coming from another direction.”

Cllr James Swindlehurst, commissioner for Slough neighbourhoods and renewal, said: “It’s shocking to hear so many drivers putting theirs and others lives at risk with such reckless and irresponsible driving.

“We’re committed to making our town and roads safer, and I hope that drivers will think twice about ignoring traffic lights with the knowledge that spot checks such as these are taking place.”

Thames Valley Police will be carrying out further Slough checks over the next few months. The motorists stopped will face a fine and points on their licence.
