Colnbrook, Slough to get new children’s centre

Slough Borough Council’s Cabinet meeting, held on January 19, approved the development for a new children’s centre at Colnbrook C of E Primary School.

The Slough graduated children’s centre will provide sessional childcare alongside a range of multi-agency services for families with children under five years of age.

The development of children’s centres is a key priority for the governments ten year strategy for children, with all communities having a centre by 2010.

The Slough project will meet the council’s ‘prosperity for all’ strategy, by supporting parents with young children and enabling early intervention in all areas of child development.

The centre, which will cost approximately £630,000, including furnishing, will also include services for adult learning, employment guidance and advice on benefits, housing and finance.

After the contract has gone out to tender, it is hoped the building work will start this summer and be completed by March 2010.

Jean Cameron, development manager, children’s centres, for Slough Borough Council, said: “A children’s centre in Colnbrook will make a huge difference to those with young children and parents who need support and information.

“This will be our ninth children’s centre and will help improve the prospects of the children and their families for future academic gain and well-being.”

Other children’s centres are at Claycots Primary School, Marish Primary School, Montem Primary School, Penn Wood Primary School, St Mary’s Primary School, Cippenham Nursery School, James Elliman Primary School and Upton Lea Community Centre.

Commissioner for Slough education and children’s services, Cllr Sukhjit Dhaliwal, added: “The new children’s centre will be a real asset to Colnbrook and it’s fantastic to be funding this project.”
