'Architecture 08' celebrated in Slough

A month of exciting events will be taking place in Slough this summer as part of ‘Architecture 08’, a celebration of art and architecture across the South East of England.

Kicking off the action on Friday June 6 will be the ‘Urban Jig’, an organised walk along Slough’s High Street, providing insight into the hidden architecture of the town.

The walk will take place from 11am until 12pm, and will be led by staff from Slough Library and the Art at the Centre project.

Starting outside Slough Library, the walk will make its way down the High Street, providing glimpses into architecture of the past, as well as observing how the Art at the Centre project will revitalise the High Street for future generations.

Also taking place in June is an exhibition entitled ‘Exploring Parkland Landscapes and Buildings’ which will be held on the following dates:

* Slough Library: Monday June 2 to Saturday June 21.
* Slough Museum: Wednesday June 25 to Saturday June 28.

The exhibition is a visual exploration of Slough’s Victorian Herschel Park.

Tony Pilmer, local studies librarian for Slough Borough Council, said: “We want to show residents the wealth of history that can be found in our buildings, landscapes and parks.

“The events will offer an interesting insight into how buildings have evolved over the years.

“The walk is an excellent way to highlight how Art at the Centre will enhance the High Street and demonstrate how old and new styles will work together side by side, to create an exciting new Slough.

“Architecture 08 is a great way for people to take the time to explore their town, and we hope the Urban Jig and exhibition will evoke a sense of pride in Slough’s buildings and architecture.”
