A year of Slough change

A year of change for the environment has been taking place in Slough with many new facilities, including a new-look recycling centre at Chalvey, electric vans and more recycling containers.

Also, Slough residents have been successfully recycling plastics, as well as the usual paper, cardboard, glass and tins, in their new red bins, distributed a year ago this month.

Other new features at the Slough recycling centre include -

* All new signage – including a numbering system for the various materials and improved visual impact to help residents navigate their way round the site.
* An information stand with leaflets and a sign displaying the current percent recycling rate for the site.
* A reorganisation of the small recycling banks and the addition of some new services – toner cartridge recycling, toys and used vegetable oil.
* The creation of a safe walk-way along the bulk containers to allow residents to move freely between the various waste types.

The refurbishment will be completed after lines are painted on the floor to further define walk-ways and assist the movement of traffic.

A new waste oil container is also being bought for the site for recycling engine oils.

Many Slough residents may have also spotted some electric vans in the borough which help to pick up rubbish and heavy duty items, such as washing machines, to take to the dump. The five vans new vans will save 20 tonnes of carbon over the next coming year.

New posters have also been placed on the refuse collection lorries with ‘wanted’ on the side, displaying all the materials that can be recycled in the red bins.

Commissioner for Slough environment and open spaces, Cllr Satpal Parmar, said: “There are so many new things happening in Slough to keep it a clean and safe place to live and work, not to mention helping to the planet in general.

“The new features at the recycling centre look great, along with the new look lorries and electric vans. I hope the residents of Slough take full advantage of all the ways in which they can recycle and keep the borough a great place to be.”
