A greener future for Slough

People 1st (Slough) and heating company Broag-Rehema marked the first anniversary of their carbon offsetting agreement by presenting the Climate Care Trust with a cheque for £3,247 to finance a carbon reduction project.

At the end of 2007, People 1st (Slough) became the first social housing organisation in the South of England to instigate a carbon offsetting agreement. This was signed in partnership with Broag-Rehema, the company who supply boilers for social houses in Slough.

Under the ground-breaking Slough scheme, Broag-Rehema agreed to pay a carbon offsetting sum of £7.50 per tonne to Climate Care for each new boiler purchased.

In addition to this, the company supplied houses with a new Avanta boiler which incorporated significant environmental improvements, reducing carbon emissions by 34 percent compared to its predecessor.

The money presented to Climate Care will help to deliver carbon emission reductions around in the world through carefully monitored and verified projects

Climate Care reduces greenhouse gas emissions on behalf of companies and runs projects aimed at improving the people’s standard of living and protecting wildlife habitats.

Sue Morris, chair of People 1st (Slough) said: “The scheme came about through our close relationship with Broag-Remeha.

“The agreement is a positive step for the environment and emphasises both the global importance of reducing carbon emissions and benefits for our tenants closer to home.

“The initiative delivers excellent value for money with competitive pricing and product reliability.

“We’re happy to play a key facilitating role in taking steps to improve the quality of our environment.”

Cllr James Swindlehurst, commissioner for Slough neighbourhoods and renewal, said: “It’s important for the council and its organisations to take its social and environmental responsibility seriously.

“With the number of boilers installed in social housing, this is a wise move by both People 1st and its supplier.

“People 1st should be proud they have taken a positive move to reducing carbon emissions in the town.”
